Arusha Lutheran Medical Center
Laparoscopic Surgery Training Course

Abdominal and pelvic laparoscopic surgical procedures are routinely performed at Arusha Lutheran Medical Center. ALMC along with its partner, Exempla Healthcare in Denver, Colorado, USA (http://www.exempla.org) sponsored the Second Annual Laparoscopic Surgery Workshop for ALMC surgeons, registrars, interns, medical students, and invited Tanzanian general surgeons from October 29 to November 1, 2012. The course included lectures, practice sessions with dummies and hands-on operating room experience with laparoscopic cholecystectomies and appendectomies. Shown in the large image above is the course faculty, administrators and facilitators.

Above, an ALMC intern assisted by Dr. Elaine Landry practices grasping objects with a clamp and below, a medical student practices tying knots laparoscopically.

Above, Dr. Joel Sigdestad of Exempla Healthcare discusses Exempla-donated laparoscopic surgery equipment with ALMC Surgeons Paul Kisanga and Jenny Wagner and operating room staff.

At the end of the course Coordinator Sarah Rejman and Drs. Debra Davis, Joel Sigdestad, Mark Jacobson and Paul Kisanga present the participants with their certificates and a CD copy of the lectures.
